Harlem
hatter
When it comes to crowning
famous heads, Rod Keenan seems to have them all covered. Jay Kay from
Jamiroquai, Brad Pitt, Alicia Keys and Elvis Costello are some of
the celebrities who have worn hats by Keenan who has been working
out of his studio in Harlem for the past 14 years
Using blocks from the '40s
and '50s, he sticks to classic shapes trimmed in novel ways: grosgrain
bands with D-rings or vintage materials from Japan. When asked why
he chose Harlem as his neighbourhood, Keenan explains, "My decision
to live in Harlem was part circumstance and part New York real estate
market: a temporary living situation turned up, and 14 years later
Harlem is home. It is hard not to be influenced by one's environment,
of course. In Harlem, within the African-American and Spanish communities,
there is a sense of polish to one's dress, especially in the older
generations. Hats play an integral part in this image and it is inspiring
to be surrounded by such style."
Luckily
for all those Canadian accessories lovers, a selection from Rod Keenan's
spring collection is available at Holt Renfrew. Laura Minquini
